Firebrand Human Rights Defender Masaraure Convicted: Awaiting Sentencing
By Lloyd Takawira
Harare, Zimbabwe — Obert Masaraure, a prominent activist and leader of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz), faces an uncertain future after being convicted on charges related to obstructing the course of justice.
Masaraure is accused of obstructing the course of justice. The charges against Masaraure stem from his demand for Chere’s release, following the latter’s apprehension in connection with the death of Artuz member Roy Issa back in 2016.
Harare regional magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka delivered the guilty verdict, asserting that Masaraure obstructed justice. “The court is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offence,” Chakanyuka stated. The State successfully established a prima facie case against Masaraure, leaving his fate hanging in the balance.
