Grid Africa and Huawei sign MoU to provide 72MW of solar for Zimbabwe’s mines

Renewable energy provider Grid Africa has signed an agreement with Huawei towards installing 72MW of solar energy for Zimbabwean mining companies.

A recent report by the Chamber of Mines says power cuts and high tariffs cost the mining sector up to US$500 million in potential earnings this year.

Norman Moyo, CEO of Grid Africa, said the partnership with Huawei would help miners enhance their energy efficiency.

“This initiative will not only optimize energy usage but also provide a sustainable power source that will enhance the operational efficiency and financial stability of the mining sector,” said Moyo.

Mr. Xia Hesheng, President of Huawei Digital Power Sub-Saharan Region, said: “We are excited to merge our solar expertise with Grid Africa to empower Zimbabwe’s mining industry with clean, dependable energy sources. This partnership highlights our dedication to driving sustainable progress, fostering long-term operational sustainability, and reshaping the industrial energy landscape in the region.”

Mining companies are among the heaviest energy users in the country. According to Energy Minister Edgar Moyo, demand from the mining industry alone has now risen to 2,600MW due to new projects and expansion. This is almost three times Zimbabwe’s current power generation over just over 1,000MW and above installed capacity.

Government has said it wants mining firms to generate their own power and ease their reliance on ZESA.

According to Grid Africa, a 72MW solar project could create as many as 3,744 total jobs, directly and indirectly, while also saving foreign currency by offsetting power imports.

“The trailblazing 72MW solar agreement between Grid Africa and Huawei paves the way for a new era of sustainable energy solutions, setting a benchmark for companies committed to improving operational efficiency, championing environmental stewardship, and driving transformative change in industrial energy consumption,” Grid Africa said in a statement.
