Chitungwiza | 22 July 2025 – A devastating collision between a 30-tonne haulage truck and a commuter omnibus along Seke Road at Hunyani Bridge has left at least 17 people feared dead and several others critically injured this morning.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, pulling three survivors from the mangled wreckage, who were immediately taken to hospital in critical condition. The kombi was crushed beneath the heavy truck, with rescuers describing the wreckage as one of the worst they have ever seen.
Eyewitnesses say the haulage truck veered into the opposite lane while attempting to avoid a Honda Fit that had allegedly swerved into its path. The truck then collided head-on with the fully loaded kombi, dragging it under its frame.
The aftermath was chaotic as police, fire, and ambulance crews worked tirelessly to retrieve bodies and clear the road, which has since been cordoned off. Grieving families have begun arriving at the scene to help with victim identification.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash, but initial reports suggest a combination of reckless driving and possible mechanical failure.
Road Safety Concerns
This tragedy is the latest in a string of deadly accidents on Zimbabwe’s highways this year. In February, 24 people died in a Beitbridge bus-truck collision, while similar crashes in March and May claimed multiple lives. Road authorities continue to urge caution on highways, citing speeding, driver error, and poor vehicle maintenance as leading causes of such disasters.
