Met office says heavy rains expected in the country this weekend

HARARE – Zimbabwe is likely to experience heavy rains starting this 18-19 December due to a cloud band which drifted towards the country from neighbouring Botswana, the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) and Meteorological Services Department (MSD) have said.

The organisations said the cloud band is moving slowly into the country through Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces.

“A cloud band is drifting into the country from Botswana through Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces from Saturday 17 December 2022 and should slowly move eastward across much of the country,” Meteorological Services Department said.

According to MSD, localised hailstorms accompanied by strong winds with potential to cause property destruction will be experienced in some places.

Meanwhile, MSD warned citizens against lightning dangers as it continues to be a menace during the raid season.

The department also urged citizens to look out for open drains and potholes that may be covered in water while also calling on motorists to exercise caution on the roads as visibility is often reduced during the rainy season.
