Starlink went live in Zimbabwe in September 2024. This resource page is a guide for everything Starlink. If you have a question not answered here, or useful information you think we should include,

Starlink is an internet service that uses satellites. The satellites work in pretty much the same way Dstv or OpenView works – that is, they can reach anywhere you are. This means people in remote areas can use it. This is great for remote schools, farms, mines, holiday resorts, rural homesteaders, religious groups…

Beyond network coverage, the major Starlink attraction is price. Starlink subscriptions are currently $50 a month for unlimited usage. This is generally lower than established internet providers charge.

  • $200 for the Mini kit.

Is Starlink operational in Zimbabwe?

Yes. As of 6 September 2024.

What is the difference between Standard and Mini?

Starlink users on the Mini plan are prioritized behind Standard and will see slower speeds during peak hours.

In Addition the mini has a lower power input and smaller footprint since it’s intended to be portable, so it has about 100Mbps download. The standard has 50-250Mbps.

However, both have unlimited usage.

What is difference between Residential and Roam

The residential package can only be used within 5km of your registered address. The Roam package can be used anywhere within the southern Africa.

What is the shipping cost for the Starlink kit if I buy online?

The shipping cost is $23.

How long will it take to get my Starlink after I order online?

It will take about 1 to 2 weeks to get it delivered to your address.
It will be delivered by DHL.

Do I need to pay duty for my Starlink when it is delivered, after buying online?

No. When you pay for the Starlink online, you’d have also paid for duty. it will be delivered to your home by DHL

How do I activate my Starlink kit after it is delivered?

Download the Starlink app on your smartphone. Follow the in-app instructions to set up your dish. Connect your devices to your new Starlink WiFi network.

Are the monthly subscriptions likely to increase at some point?

It is hard to say, but it might happen. Starlink charges different prices throughout the world. Its most expensive in the USA where the monthly subscription is $120 for the basic package. In Africa and Asia it ranges from about $36 to $100.

Starlink increased prices in August 2024 throughout Africa. It is possible for another increase to be made at some point.

Do I need a SIM Card for Starlink

No. Starlink does not use a SIM card. You just need the kit.

What’s included in a Starlink kit?

– The Terminal itself, which is the thing that acts like a satellite dish
– Stand, which the ‘satellite dish’ is mounted on
– Router, which is the one inside the house giving out the local WiFi signal
– Starlink Cable, a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable
– Power Cable for the router.

Can I carry my Starlink with me an use it wherever I am in Zimbabwe?

Yes, but you need to be on the Roam package which is priced at $100 a month. The residential package will not work beyond 5km of your registered address.

Wanted find out if I get Starlink then move from my current location what happens?

If you’re moving permanently, you will need to change your address on the Starlink website. If you’re moving for a short period (e.g. just a weekend or month) then you will need to subscribe for the Roam package, which is priced at $100 a month.

I need help installing Starlink, what is the price?

The Starlink internet ,speeds will generally vary between 25Mbps and 100Mbps depending on conditions. This is more than enough for general use – downloading stuff, streaming, email. You can pretty much do anything. Still it’s slower than fibre internet.

With 25Mbps speed you can download:

  • a 10 song music album in about 16 seconds.
  • a high definition movie within 5 minutes.
  • a 25 megabytes pdf book in about 8 seconds

Generally, uploading things (like uploading a YouTube video) will take longer than downloading (like watching a YouTube video)
